Gerard was born in Italy on the 9th of April 1726. Gerard started working at a young age, after his father's death, to help the family. When he was 19 years old he set up a tailor shop, and supported his mother and sister, and gave what he could to the poor and in need.
In 1749 Gerard joined the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, a missionary order where he dedicated his life to helping the poor, and where he remained until the date of his death, in 1755.
There are many miracles associated with Saint Gerard but the most popular one is when visiting a particular family, he accidentally dropped his handkerchief on the floor as he left. One of the daughters in that family noticed and ran after him to return it. He told her to keep it, as she could need it in the future. Years later that young girl, by then a married woman, was about to die while giving birth and asked to be brought that same handkerchief, and immediately the pain disappeared, and she gave birth to a healthy baby.
Gerard was beatified in 1893 by Pope Leo XIII, and canonised in 1904 by Pope Pius X.
His feast day is 16 October, and he is known as the patron saint of Mothers.
